Science

“A scientist is not the person who gives the right answers; he is the one who answers the right questions!” Albert Einstein

At Lakeside Primary Academy, we ASPIRE for children to become independent and inquisitive scientists, who are curious about the world around them. During their time at Lakeside, children are encouraged to be navigators of their own learning in science and discover and unpick new concepts through scientific enquiry.

Across the academy, all year groups meet the National Curriculum objects, while embedding learning within scientific investigation. Our children start each science topic by exploring the new concepts, asking questions, observing and generating logical predictions. Next, they are encouraged to investigate their ideas and questions, through active experimentation or by identifying and classifying into groups. Finally, children report on their findings through their results, conclusions and explanations. Our ethos is to encourage the use of scientific enquiry within all stages of our scientific process, so that children are familiar with these skills and can build on them throughout their primary school years.

At Lakeside Primary Academy, we understand the importance of progression of scientific knowledge and skills not just across their primary school years, but as the children head into secondary school. To ensure knowledge is embedded and solidified in long-term memory, we promote the use of active retrieval, metacognition and memory games, as strategies to help children retrieve knowledge and store this in their long-term memory. We are passionate about the children having a confident foundation of science, to prepare them for their secondary school science journey in biology, chemistry and physics, therefore determined for all children to leave year 6 feeling confident in science.

Finally, outside of the classroom we encourage children to be involved with a number of scientific enrichment opportunities. All children take part in the yearly STEM week, which has a focus on a scientific project that everyone and parents can enjoy. Alongside this, the children in year 5 and 6 have the opportunity to discover scientific careers through visits from outside science agencies.

Through all of this, our children ASPIRE in science!
